10 Things to Look For When Buying a Used Reefer Trailer

When buying a used reefer trailer, it is important to inspect your trailer to ensure you are buying quality equipment that will help your trucking business turn a profit.  Here are a few checkpoints to consider before you sign the dotted line and purchase a used semi reefer trailer.

Service Records

Check to see if the reefer trailer you are purchasing comes with service records.  Ensuring the equipment, you are purchasing was well cared for before you owned it is important for the life of the unit and the box.  Being able to see how often the reefer was serviced and checking for any past accidents gives you a huge advantage in understanding your used reefer trailer.

Hook Up Test

Crawl under the trailer and inspect the crossmembers to ensure they are straight and secure. Pay special attention to any signs of corrosion, cracks, or significant rust, especially at the joints and where they connect to the trailer frame. Use a flashlight to better visualize hard-to-see areas.

Secure Crossmembers

Crawl under the trailer and inspect the crossmembers to ensure they are straight and secure. Pay special attention to any signs of corrosion, cracks, or significant rust, especially at the joints and where they connect to the trailer frame. Use a flashlight to better visualize hard-to-see areas.

DOT Inspection

Every reefer trailer must be DOT inspected. A current Department of Transportation (DOT) inspection certificate is a non-negotiable requirement. This certificate ensures the reefer trailer meets all the necessary safety and operational standards mandated by law. The DOT inspection must be on the trailer.

Tandem Pins Slide Properly

Perform an operation test of the tandem pins by engaging and disengaging them. The pins should move freely and lock securely into place without any hesitation. The ability of the tandem pins to slide properly is essential for adjusting the trailer’s axle weight and balance. This functionality should be tested to ensure it operates smoothly, as it’s critical for the legal and safe distribution of load weight.

Light Check

Beyond the initial electrical check, ensure that all lights on the trailer are functioning correctly. This includes interior lights, if applicable, to ensure safe and efficient loading and unloading operations during low light conditions.

Straight Floors

Checking the trailer floor is really important. You have to make sure the floor is strong enough and doesn’t have any big damage or wear. The floor should be flat and tight, with no big cracks or holes, so it can hold the cargo safely. If the floor is made of wood, look for any parts that are rotting. If it’s metal, make sure there are no breaks or cracks. Also, the floor should be firmly attached to the trailer’s sides. A floor that’s not in good shape can cause the load to move around or even fall, which could be dangerous for the driver and other people on the road. Regularly checking and taking care of the trailer floor helps keep everything safe and makes the trailer last longer.

Airflow System Check

Verify that the air chute is properly hung and secured, and the bulkhead is not overly damaged to impede airflow. Adequate airflow is crucial for maintaining the required temperature throughout the cargo space.

Properly Sealed

Inspect the trailer to ensure it is properly sealed against external elements. This includes checking the doors, roof, and walls for any signs of damage or wear that could compromise the thermal efficiency of the reefer unit.

DOT Bumper in Proper Position

Check that the DOT bumper is securely attached and does not deviate more than 3 inches from its original position. This is not only a safety measure but also a legal requirement to minimize damage in the event of a rear-end collision.

Cleanliness

Finally, assess the overall condition and cleanliness of the trailer. A clean, well-kept trailer is often an indicator of meticulous maintenance and care, promising better reliability and longevity. Purchasing a used reefer trailer involves careful consideration and inspection to ensure you’re making a wise investment. By following these guidelines, you can confidently select a unit that meets your business needs while ensuring safety, compliance, and efficiency.
